The French Side of Lake Geneva: A Luxury Resort Families and Golfers Should Know About

5 min read

There are destinations I expect my clients to ask me about. Paris. The French Riviera. Provence. Switzerland in the summer.

And then there are places I come across that immediately make me wonder: Why aren’t more American travelers doing this?

Évian-les-Bains is one of them.

Sitting on the French shore of Lake Geneva, directly across the water from Lausanne, Évian gives travelers something I find especially compelling: the chance to experience this spectacular lake-and-Alps region from France while keeping Switzerland remarkably accessible. A year-round ferry connects Évian and Lausanne in approximately 35 minutes, so you can quite literally have breakfast in France and spend the afternoon exploring Switzerland.

At the center of it all is Hôtel Royal at Évian Resort, a five-star palace hotel and member of The Leading Hotels of the World that I think deserves far more attention from American families and golfers.

Why I’m Looking at the French Side of Lake Geneva

Hôtel Royal has been overlooking Lake Geneva for more than a century, surrounded by 47 acres of parkland and century-old trees. The Belle Époque palace has 150 rooms and suites, with many looking toward the lake and the mountains of Switzerland beyond it.

What appeals to me, though, is not simply that it is beautiful.

This is a true resort.

That distinction matters when I am designing longer European vacations. After several days sightseeing in Paris, Rome, or London, most families don't necessarily need another hotel where the expectation is to leave every morning and spend ten hours touring. Sometimes the most luxurious thing I can build into an itinerary is a place where everyone can actually stay put.

Évian Resort gives you that permission.

You can walk into town, spend the afternoon beside the lake, head into the mountains, play tennis, go boating, visit Switzerland—or do absolutely none of those things.

And because you are staying on the French side of Lake Geneva, I can also compare the overall value of an Évian stay with comparable options across the lake rather than automatically placing the entire trip in Switzerland.

A Rare Resort That Works for Adults and Children

One of the reasons Hôtel Royal immediately caught my attention is that it solves a problem I see frequently in luxury family travel.

Parents want a gorgeous hotel, an excellent restaurant, a legitimate spa and experiences they would choose even if they weren't traveling with children. Their children, understandably, couldn't care less

about the thread count.

Too often, somebody compromises.

Évian Resort is different because its family program is not an afterthought. The dedicated Kid's Resort covers more than 1,000 square meters and includes separate programming for babies, children and teenagers. The Baby Club welcomes little ones from four to 36 months by reservation, while the Kid's Club and Teen's Club offer supervised activities for older children and teens. The resort also offers interconnecting accommodations, babysitting options, baby equipment and family facilities.

That creates one of my favorite kinds of family vacation days: everyone gets to do something they actually enjoy.

The children might spend part of the day at the Kid's Resort while Mom heads to the spa and Dad plays golf—or vice versa. Grandparents might enjoy a leisurely lunch while their grandchildren are busy with activities. Then everyone meets back at the pool or for dinner.

That isn't traveling separately. It's giving a multigenerational trip enough breathing room that everyone enjoys being together again.

Golf, Spa, and a Very Good Dinner

For golfers, Évian becomes even more interesting.

The Champions Course at Évian Resort Golf Club hosts the Amundi Evian Championship, the only women's major championship held in continental Europe. The 18-hole, par-72 course sits about three kilometers from Hôtel Royal, with resort shuttle service available.

But this isn't a resort where you need an entire family of scratch golfers to justify staying.

The Golf Academy and six-hole Lake Course give beginners, younger golfers and experienced players looking for a shorter round another option. The Lake Course can be played in under 90 minutes, which makes it especially attractive for a family that wants to try golf without turning an entire vacation day into a golf day.

Meanwhile, non-golfers have a very compelling alternative.

The 1,700-square-meter evian®SPA was designed around the life cycle of evian natural mineral water and includes both indoor and outdoor heated pools, fitness facilities and extensive wellness experiences.

And then there is dinner.

Les Fresques, Hôtel Royal's fine-dining restaurant, currently holds one Michelin star. The setting alone is memorable—Art Nouveau frescoes overhead and views across Lake Geneva—but the restaurant also draws heavily from the region, including freshwater fish from the lake and produce from the resort's own gardens.

This is precisely why I like the property for families. You haven't chosen a “family hotel” instead of a sophisticated one. You've chosen both.

How I Would Build a Trip Around Évian Resort

The mistake I wouldn't make is treating Évian as another box to check on a frantic tour of Europe.

I would give it time.

For a family traveling to France, I love the idea of beginning with Paris and then transitioning to four or five nights at Hôtel Royal. After museums, monuments and city sightseeing, the pace deliberately changes. Perhaps one day is spent crossing the lake to Lausanne and visiting the Olympic Museum.

Another could include a mountain or lake experience. Then I would protect at least one largely unscheduled resort day—children at the Kid's Resort for a few hours, golf or spa for the adults, and everyone together again that afternoon.

For a golf-loving couple or family, I would build four or five nights around one or two tee times on the Champions Course, perhaps a family session through the Golf Academy or Lake Course, a proper spa afternoon, dinner at Les Fresques and a day in Switzerland. It's particularly appealing when one spouse loves golf and the other emphatically does not.

For a longer Alpine itinerary, the possibilities get even better. Depending on the travelers, I might pair Évian with Paris, Annecy, Chamonix, Geneva or additional time in Switzerland. Yvoire, the medieval French village on Lake Geneva, also makes an appealing regional addition.

The goal would not be to squeeze all of them into one trip. The goal would be to choose the combination that actually fits the way you like to travel.

The Mirabelle Travel Perspective

Hôtel Royal is also a Virtuoso property, which gives me another reason to consider it when the hotel is the right match for a client.

My role isn't simply to reserve the room. It's to determine which room or suite configuration makes sense for your family, whether lake view is worth prioritizing for your particular stay, how many nights the resort deserves, when golf should be reserved, what to book in advance for children, and how Évian fits into the larger trip.

When applicable to your dates and reservation, I can also advise on current Virtuoso amenities and preferred benefits rather than assuming every offer applies to every stay.

More importantly, I can design the logistics around it. A beautiful hotel isn't particularly useful if it is awkwardly wedged into the wrong itinerary.

One to Put on Your France List

If Lake Geneva has been on your list, or if it wasn't until now, Hôtel Royal at Évian Resort is the kind of property I would happily build an itinerary around.

For families and golfers in particular, it offers a combination I don't find often in Europe: a true five-star resort, championship golf, serious dining and wellness, thoughtful children's programming, and both France and Switzerland within easy reach.

And perhaps the best part is that it still feels a little unexpected.

Mirabelle Travel designs customized journeys throughout France and Switzerland, including luxury family travel, multigenerational vacations and golf-focused itineraries. If Évian Resort sounds like your kind of Europe, I'd love to help you build the rest of the trip around it.
